SPATIO Gate is a true gated reverb.

Whereas normal reverb is generally used to emulate the acoustic characteristics of physical spaces, gated reverb is a special audio effect: a dense reverb that is cut off abruptly. Very popular throughout the 80’s, especially on drums, this effect creates powerful transients and, due to the absence of the reverberation tail, cleaner mixes.

Gated reverb is characterized by a particular shape of its Impulse Response (IR). An IR is the output of a system, as a reverberator, when a very rapid (ideally instantaneous) excitation is applied to its input.

Room impulse responses have an exponentially decaying slope (Fig. 1). This is the natural behavior of acoustic spaces due to the absorption of their surfaces and of air.

Gated reverberators are not designed to mimic real rooms, they are special effects designed to have non-exponentially decaying IR. Gated are truncated impulse responses (Fig. 2), therefore they are lacking of the later and less energetic part of the impulse response. That’s why they tend to be very effective to impress a strong impact to the attack of a signal.
